About the
Director
Michael Banick began his appointment as Director of the Mountainside
Public Library in February 2007. Prior to joining the MPL, Mr.
Banick held professional positions at Union County College - Cranford,
the Sayreville Public Library and Monmouth University, where he
coordinated the university's busy library instruction program and
oversaw the library's special collections department.
Mr. Banick earned his Masters in Library
Service (MLS) from Rutgers University. He also has a Masters in
Business Administration (MBA) from Monmouth University and a BA in
History, with honors, from Rutgers. Mr. Banick holds a New Jersey
Professional Librarian's Certificate and a Certificate in Preservation
Management from the Rutgers University Preservation Management
Institute. While completing his MLS, Mr. Banick was awarded the
Washington Association of New Jersey Fellowship at Morristown National
Historical Park, where he worked in the park library and archives
assisting researchers and aiding in the park's conservation and
preservation efforts. He also worked in the book preservation
department of the Thomas J. Watson Library of the Metropolitan Museum of
Art in New York City.
Mr. Banick has served as a consultant to
the National Park Service, has published articles in The Encyclopedia
of New Jersey and The International Military Encyclopedia and
has presented on the topics of preservation, oral histories and library
customer service at several colleges, universities and professional
conferences in the tri-state area.
Mr. Banick is a member of the
Mountainside Rotary club and was 2010-11 club president. He was the 2010 president of the Libraries of Union County Consortium (LUCC)
and also has memberships in the American Library Association, the New
Jersey Library Association and the National Association of Scholars.
