ADULT PROGRAMS 2008

Lunch - n - Learn @ the Library
A Special Spring Series

Join your friendly library director for an introduction to some of the great things we can do online with our electronic databases here at the Mountainside Public Library. 

Wednesdays in May at 12:30 pm:

  • May 7:  Basic genealogical research
  • May 14:  Research a product
  • May 21:  Online Reader's Advisory

Come to one or come to all!  Each session will take about 40 minutes.  Bring your lunch and a notebook... you might be surprised at how much you can do with our electronic resources

Sessions will be held in the Library Meeting Room.  Demo will be done on the bigscreen using a laptop computer

Wednesday Night at the Movies

All movies start at 6:30 pm in the Library Meeting Room

May 7:  Juno

A quirky teen pregnancy movie that doesn't insult its audience.  A witty comedy about growing up fast.  Winner: Best original screenplay.

May 14: La Vie En Rose

A story about the chanteuse whose voice was the "soul of Paris" according to Marlene Dietrich.  Winner: Best Actress Marion Cotillard ; Best Achievement in Makeup.

May 21:  Charlie Wilson's War

About the most successful covert operation in US history run by a playboy congressman, Houston socialite and a renegade CIA agent.  R 1 hr 42 minutes

June 11:  The Great Debaters

Based on a 1935 true story about an unexpected title debate between a small, all black Texas college and Harvard.

Sidney Lumet returns to direct this action packed thriller

June 25:  The Other Boleyn Girl

The story of Anne and Mary Boleyn based upon Phillipa Gregory's novel.  PG 13    1 hour 55 minutes

July 2:  The Bucket List

"What do you want to experience before you ..."  Directed by Rob Reiner.  PG 13   1 hour 37 minutes

Come join us for a night out at the movies.

Showings are free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided.

Registration is not required but seating is limited

 

Brown Bag Movies -- our Monday film series...

...will resume on Monday, April 14th.  Join us at 12 noon in the meeting room.  Bring your lunch and we'll provide the drinks and desserts.  Introductions and commentary will be provided by George Fabian, a Mountainside resident and film aficionado. 

 

The theme of the season is ... Musicals from the Forties.

  • April 14:  Ziegfeld Follies (1946)
    An all-star review, including Fred Astaire, Lucille Ball, Judy Garland, Gene Kelly and many others.  In color.
     

  • April 21:  Orchestra Wives (1942)
    Story about catty wives who accompany their big band husbands on road trips.  Great music!
     

  • April 28: Stormy Weather (1943) Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, Lena Horne, Fats Waller.  Robinson relives his dance career and his rise to the top. 
     

  • May 5:  Good News (1947)
    Peter Lawford, June Allison, Mel Torme, Joan McCracken.  Bright, good natured college-set musical.  The songs don't come much better: "The Best Things in Life are Free", "Varsity Drag", Pass that Peace Pipe" and more. 
     

  • May 12: Cabin in the Sky (1943). 
    Ethel Waters, Lena Horne, Duke Ellington. In this diverting fantasy, Lucifer and an angel fight for the sould of a ne'er do well gambler. 
     

  • May 19:  Girl Crazy (1943). 
    Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, June Allison, Tommy Dorsey.  A young man is sent to a small southwestern college to forget girls but since this is a boy-meets-girl story, you can imagine what happens!

Bookmark Contest!

Help us celebrate Children's Book Week by entering our Bookmark Contest.

Entries must be received by April 30th.
        (Children's Book Week is May 12 - 17)

More information & entry forms are available in the library.  Pick one up today!

One winner from each grade K-8.

A winning bookmark will be duplicated and distributed this spring at the library.

All entered bookmarks will be displayed during Children's Book Week.

Toddler Story Time
Tuesdays from 10 - 10:30 am

Stories, nursery rhymes & finger plays for two-year-olds and their adult caregiver.  

Preschool Story Time
Wednesdays from 2:00 - 2:30 pm
April 30, May 7, May 14 & May 21
Stories for preschoolers ages 3, 4 & 5.

Registration required.  Call or sign up in person.

Spring Story Time Theater for Kindergarteners

Come join Mrs. Jan Elby as you read, act out and retell
your favorite stories.

Wednesdays from 3:30 - 4:15
April 30, May 7, May 14 & May 21.

Registration begins April 14th.  Please call the library at 233-0115.  Space is limited, so be sure to register for this popular program.  Open to Mountainside residents only.
