Welcome to the Friends of the Mountainside Library page. For more than 60 years, the Friends have played a significant role in creating and nurturing this important, vibrant community resource.
The Friends is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization as determined by the Internal Revenue Service. 100% of our fundraising proceeds go directly to the Library. All Mountainside residents receive our annual newsletter in the Fall, along with a donation form, but we happily accept donations year ‘round. Click here for a donation form. Your donation makes you a Friends member.
The Friends fund >90% of the Library’s programming as well as new initiatives and upgrades that continue to make the Mountainside Public Library special, including:
- Expansion of the library’s collections
- Licensing and other fees for a variety of programs
- Children's programming
- Technology, equipment, and furniture
- Ongoing programs and new initiatives on the Library’s “wish list”
During these challenging times, the Friends commitment to the Library has been as strong as ever. In January we instituted our free, very popular virtual event series. As of June 2021 participants have enjoyed a variety of 19 presentations. In fact, more Friends-sponsored virtual events are already in the works and the program will be continuing! Check the Library Events Page frequently for upcoming virtual presentations here.
The Friends held pop-up, in-person, outdoor Book Sales in April and June. We were delighted to see so many grateful Book Sale friends and fans, who let us know how happy they were to be able to browse, buy books, and tell us how much they’ve missed our in-person events. We thank all our volunteers, from members who worked the sales; to supporters for their tarps, tables, canopies, and “elbow grease;” to Girl Scouts and other volunteers who helped dismantle the sales.
The Friends have also been working with the Library Director to identify and support pandemic-era programs such as the virtual Book Club. The Friends supply the books, which will then be sold at our Book Sales.
Traditional in-person fundraisers include Fall and Spring Book Sales, a Holiday Boutique, and a Make Me Chic Boutique – just in time for Mother’s Day. We have fun organizing and running these in-person fundraisers, and once they resume, volunteers are welcome!
The Friends of the Mountainside Library webpage will be updated periodically. Please stay tuned and please come to the Library, whether it’s curbside, electronically or in person. The Library is here for you!
