The History of Quilting and Modern Quilts

The History of Quilting and Modern Quilts

Take a step back in time and rediscover the rich history of quilting and handwork from 1830 to 1930—a story stitched with creativity, community, and change. Presenter and local New Jersey native Gail Thompson will give an overview of the vast history of quilting as well as bring in a few pieces for demonstration- ranging from clothing, holiday home décor, embroidered quilts and much more!  The importance of color in quilting will also be discussed.

We'll also journey into the 1920s and 1930s, a period of great prosperity and invention. Discover how the Singer Sewing Machine Company revolutionized home sewing, and hear about the massive quilt contest hosted by Sears, Roebuck & Co.—the largest of its kind in history.

Aspects of modern day quilting and techniques of how it's made will also be discussed. Thompson will show these techniques in the various quilts that she will be bringing for demonstration.

Please sit towards the front to be able to see the quilts.
